Best in Show!

I'm never one to toot my own horn...So we'll just call this a press release :-P

Last night I entered my first print competition (AKA Salon) as a member of the Tallahassee Professional Photographers Guild...And won Best in Show!!

Here's the winning image: Origami Unwrapped

It scored an 85 - The primary challenge of a print competition is to score 80, which constitutes a "merit." A merit means that the image is exceptional work at a professional level.

I received an 80 on this image: Exit Row Seats

My other entries and their respective scores may be found here.

Long's Photography received 2nd place for a beautiful album they created! And Cindy Strickland of A Moment Captured received 3rd on an amazing beach family portrait painting.

Judging was conducted by:

Sandra Pearce
Al Audleman
Brenda Estes

And moderated by:
Martin Gudz

All of whom did an amazing job, and were very helpful in their critiques.

Meghan & I sat in the front row during judging, and I can easily say that every one of the 52 images I saw was an outstanding representation of our Guild. I've only been a member for a short time, but I've come to realize that Tallahassee can pack a heck of a lot of photographic talent into one room! I think everyone deserves a congrats for competing!

Thanks to the TPPG Board for putting together a wonderful Salon, and I look forward to many more in the future!

  1. Such a wonderful statement of your work. I love that image, and you did an amazing job presenting it AND naming it!

For your readers, please understand that this is not a competition between those dabbling in photography. These are the professional studios in town competing with each other. The judges from all over the state of Florida are trained to view the technical aspects of prints and rank them on a scale of 1-100, and our MAIN GOAL is to reach an 80! Although we learned growing up that in school an 80 is either a B or a C, in this world of competition an 80 is a goal! Many prints fall between a 77-79, not reaching a "merit" status. And an 85 is much more difficult to reach than it appears. To see Lee produce this level of work certainly does speak of his ability.

    Congrats, Lee!!! Well done.
